358 granted U.S. patents

Every one confirmed against the USPTO record, not counted from memory. Granted patents are public documents, so the whole thing is here: search it, filter it, sort it, and click through to the filing. The method used to separate my record from the other James Pratts is at the bottom of the page.

How this was verified

2026-08-07

There are several James Pratts in the U.S. patent indexes: one in Granite Bay, California, one in Southwick, Massachusetts, one in Vicksburg, Mississippi, one in Raleigh. I file under two spellings, James Pratt and James H. Pratt, and both resolve to Round Rock, Texas. That city is the identity test. Every record in this table was checked against it.

The pass produced 862 confirmed records: 358 grants, 504 published applications (337 of which later granted), and 525 distinct applications. Seven records were excluded as a different James Pratt. Of the 358 grants, 226 are active, 124 expired for unpaid maintenance fees, which is ordinary portfolio pruning rather than a defect, and 8 are too recent for the public index.

Two grants in this record are now owned by other companies: US12124506, an acoustic monitoring system, held by Hyundai Motor Company, and US12562048, sensor-based detection of premises-rule violations, held by SimpliSafe. Both issued directly to the acquirer as continuations of AT&T applications, which is what a sold patent family looks like on its way through the office.

One caveat, stated plainly because the number invites it. This count reflects the assignee recorded at grant. A patent that AT&T sold after it issued would not show up here, because that transfer lives in the USPTO assignment database rather than on the face of the patent. So two is a floor, not a ceiling.
